Running, walking, and uniting for the next generation of scientists
For the fifth consecutive year, family, friends, and supporters will rally for the Alain Fontaine Scholarship Run (Course aux bourses en hommage à Alain Fontaine) to support the next generation of scientists at the IRCM. On Sunday, September 20, 2026, they will gather to walk or run along the beautiful trails connecting Waterloo, Yamaska Park, and Bromont.
The funds raised will support the IRCM Foundation’s Research Scholarship Program, which fosters excellence in the scientific projects of the Institute’s graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Over the years, this initiative has become much more than just a fundraiser. It brings together not only Alain Fontaine’s loved ones but also many people inspired by his journey, his commitment, and the causes close to his heart. Today, this wave of solidarity extends far beyond his circle of family and friends, reaching everyone who wishes to contribute to progress and carry on his legacy.
A story of enduring commitment
A patient at the IRCM Clinic for many years, Alain Fontaine shared a special bond with the Institute. Convinced of the importance of research, he was actively involved in several philanthropic activities organized by the IRCM Foundation, including the annual gala, the annual golf tournament, and the IRCM Challenge.
His commitment led him to serve on the Foundation’s Board of Directors. During his final year in this role, he encouraged his daughter, Melanie Fontaine, to join the IRCM Challenge committee and get involved herself.
When Alain stepped down due to illness, Melanie naturally continued the family’s commitment. Alain’s passing in 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, deeply affected his loved ones. That same year, the virtual edition of the IRCM Challenge allowed the family to rally around a common goal: continuing the work Alain had begun. It was in this spirit that the Course aux bourses en hommage à Alain Fontaine was launched in 2022.
The power of teamwork
As the event grew over the years, Melanie felt the need for support. For the past two years, she has been able to count on the invaluable help of Nathalie Gilbert, a close family friend with a passion for physical training.
Far more than just a training partner, Nathalie is a constant source of motivation, encouragement, and support. Through her discipline, determination, and positive attitude, she inspires those around her, especially Melanie, to push their limits and persevere in the face of obstacles. Her mantra, "mind over body," serves as a reminder that mental strength is often the key to overcoming the toughest challenges and achieving one's goals. This determination, combined with the community's generosity, continues to drive the event forward year after year.

Supporting the next generation of scientists
Thanks to the commitment of the Fontaine family and everyone participating in this initiative, the Scholarship Run in Honor of Alain Fontaine directly contributes to the development of the next generation of the IRCM researchers.
The impact of this collective effort has been particularly evident in recent years. In 2023, the event raised $14,550, followed by $14,800 in 2024 and $17,650 in 2025. These funds have supported the Alain Fontaine Tribute Scholarship, awarded annually to an IRCM master’s or doctoral student to help advance their respective research projects. This upward trend reflects the community’s growing commitment to the next generation of scientists and a collective desire to drive research forward.
For this fifth edition, Melanie and her supporters have set an ambitious goal: to raise $20,000 and further increase the initiative's impact.
This event serves as a powerful reminder that every act of solidarity can advance research and offer hope to the thousands of people affected by the disease.
